Turning Silver Into Gold

In Thoroughbred Racing by Dane Squance

Exciting colt Farnan took his overall record to three wins from four starts with a comprehensive victory in Saturday’s Gr.2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens, a key lead up race for the $3.5m Golden Slipper on March 21.

Successful over Gr.3 Gimcrack Stakes winner Every Rose two starts back in the Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic, not all went to plan in the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast behind the Mrs Fung part-owned Away Game, but the son of Not A Single Doubt clearly indicated all is back on track for the Golden Slipper when scoring by over three lengths in Saturday’s race.

With the win earning the colt a ballot exemption for the Slipper, trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott will monitor the colt before a decision is made if he needs to have another run or not.

“With the depth and the quality of the 2-year-olds in Sydney, you’ve always got to be impressed when they are able to do it in such fashion as he has,” stated Bott post-race.

“We’ve backed our colt and he’s rewarded us. He’s a very athletic horse so we’ll wait and see if he needs another run before the Slipper.”

With three of the past eight winners going on to claim the Gr.1 Golden Slipper after success in the Silver Slipper, and past wins by the likes of Pierro, Strategic, Iglesia as well as our very own Domesday, all Gr.1 producing sires, the victory of Farnan has highlighted his position as a stallion of the future.
