Cardiff Helps Raise Vital Funds for Surf Club

On Friday, November 16 the Mermaid Beach Surf Club hosted a fundraising luncheon where Aquis Farm donated a 20% leasehold interest in a two-year-old colt, Cardiff.

The interest in Cardiff was auctioned and due to the horse’s exciting racing prospects, spirited bidding resulted in the sale to a syndicate for $65,000.

The total amount for Cardiff was then gifted to the Surf Club.

This was the third year that Aquis donated a leasehold interest in one of its horses. Last year, superstar filly Fundamentalist was sold – to the same syndicate that purchased Cardiff – for $28,000.

Fundamentalist has now placed in three Group One races and has earned prize money for the purchasing syndicate’s 25% interest exceeding $80,000. The purchasing syndicate donated some of those winnings back to the club in the form of sponsorship, and used the remaining balance of the prize pool to purchase Cardiff.

“Over the three years of Aquis participation the club has been gifted in excess of $120,000 making Aquis the club’s biggest corporate partner,” Surf Sports Director and member of the Management Board Mark Lacy said.

“The Mermaid Beach Surf Club is truly grateful and forever thankful. We wish Aquis every success in achieving its commercial objectives and thank the company and its owners for their strong sense of community and philanthropy.”

After winning his two trials, Cardiff is due to start in his first race on Saturday, November 24 at Rosehill in the $150,000 Gold Gift over 1100m.

Mermaid Beach Surf Club’s luncheon is an essential part of the club’s annual fundraising initiatives. Each year the club must raise an additional $380,000 just to be able to keep patrolling and continue its surf lifesaving, nipper, youth development and surf sport programs.
