Aquis’ Breeders’ Plate Performer

In Bloodstock & Breeding, Industry News & Views, Thoroughbred Racing by Dane Squance

Saturday’s victory in the stallion-making, Gr.3 Breeders’ Plate at Royal Randwick by Global Quest, continued Aquis’ recent success in the hotly-contested first juvenile stakes race of the season for the colts.

Raced in partnership with breeder Ron Gilbert’s Highgrove Stud and G1G Racing And Breeding, the two-year-old Magic Millions secured colt settled just off the pace and with about 200m to go, finally secured daylight, with jockey James McDonald driving the Chris Waller-trained colt to an impressive length victory.

The Aquis silks have been carried to back to back successes in the race after future stallion Dubious scored a tenacious victory last season, since going on to record a further two race wins highlighted by the Gr.2 Champagne Classic during the Brisbane Winter carnival.

Dubious will be set for the Gr.1 Coolmore Stud Stakes down the Flemington straight, after his recent second in the Gr.2 Danehill Stakes over the same course and distance.

Performer, a winner of the Breeders’ Plate in 2017, now stands at Aquis’ Canungra Farm in Queensland, where the son of Champion Sire Exceed And Excel has already commenced covering his first book of high-quality mares.

The fastest winner of the Breeders’ Plate standing at stud, recording a time of 56.82, Performer, like Global Quest was trained by Champion trainer Chris Waller.

An exceptional juvenile, Performer claimed the Gr.3 Canonbury Stakes off the back of his Breeders’ Plate victory, a double only achieved in recent years by Horse of the Year producing sire Sebring and Gr.1 Golden Slipper winner Vancouver. With the likes of Choisir, Charge Forward, Snitzel, Smart Missile, Pierro, Capitalist as well as the previously mentioned Sebring and Vancouver all winning the Breeders’ Plate, the race has a proven record of producing high-class stallions with 90% of those who’ve had runners as stallions, producing stakes performers, with an incredible 60% having produced Gr.1 winners.

Bred on the same sire-making Danehill x Snippets pedigree cross as Gr.1 producing stallions Snitzel, Wanted, Hinchinbrook and Magnus, Performer is a half-brother to Gr.1 Galaxy winner Bel Sprinter and is standing at a fee of $8,800 (inc. GST) at Aquis’ Canungra Farm.
