Dubious (Not A Single Doubt) proved too good in his first start in the Group Three Arrowfield Breeders’ Plate at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

The colt was purchased by Ciaron Maher Racing in conjunction with Aquis Farm for $350,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Kitchwin Hills. He was the first foal out of Suspicieuse (Elusive City) who is a Stakes-placed mare and from the immediate family of French Group Three winner Sediciosa (Rail Link).

After winning his only trial at Royal Randwick on September 17, he became the first Victorian trained horse to win the Group Three Arrowfield Breeders’ Plate at Royal Randwick.

Dubious settled one off the leader, before taking off in the last 100m to sweep Covert Ops by a short head on the line, taking out the first juvenile race of the season, all while setting a new race-record in a time of time 0:56.45 for the 1000m.

He was our most progressive colt of our current 2-year-olds, said Ciaron Maher. “Shane McGrath from Aquis mentioned the idea. It’s a stallion-making race and that’s what we aim to do with this horse. So, he’s started his career very well.

“I’m just rapt to be able to win. If it’s history, that’s even better. Michael Walker does a lot of work for us at home also, so it’s great for him to be on board. You’ll definitely see more of me in Sydney. I might leave Dave in Melbourne. That is the plan. We are looking to settle and grow in Sydney.”

Dubious was impressive in his first start and looks toward a promising future.
