Sunlight Sets Sights On Slipper After Silver Success

Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Sunlight has set her sights on Golden Slipper glory after continuing her strong run with victory in the Silver Slipper at Rosehill Gardens recently.

The filly has pulled up well and will start favorite in this weekend’s Magic Night Stakes at Rosehille as part of her busy prep for the  Golden Slipper at the same track on March 24.

Her close victory over Estijaab in the Group 2 $250,000 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) is already being called one of the best races of the season, with many punters expecting the two horses to do battle again in the Golden edition.

Sunlight retains Golden Slipper favouritism after her odds were slashed from $6 to $4.00 while Estijaab firmed from $8 to the second line of betting at $6.

Aquis has a strong interest in Tony McEvoy-trained Sunlight with Loretta Fung, the wife of Aquis’s owner Tony Fung, holding shares along with seven other women.

The Silver Slipper victory marks a strong return to the track following her stunning salute at the Magic Millions in January where she overcame a collision with Ef Troop at the 200m mark to win by two lengths to Fullazaboot and Outback Barbie at Aquis Park.

Sunlight jockey Tim Clark was able to take a sit behind leaders Estijaab and Neutrality until asking his mount to make her ultimately successfully finishing drive from the top of the straight. He predicted there is significant improvement to come from the winner.

“That was incredible wasn’t it,” McEvoy’s assistant trainer, son Calvin said after the Silver Slipper. “I think we learned something new about her today when those other two (Estijaab and Neutrality) decided to go out in front.

“Tim just asked her to come back and she did, she just raced like a true professional.

“She’s going to have another run into the Slipper but she’s such a good doing filly and that was all class there. She was forward enough, we knew she would run well but we know there’s further improvement.

The trainer intends to follow a similar path to the successful tilt at the Magic Millions with some highly-competitive build-up races.

A $300,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Widden Stud draft for Aquis/McEvoy Mitchell Racing/Blue Sky Bloodstock, Sunlight advances her overall record to four wins and a third from five starts with earnings of $1,441,450.
