Sweet Orange (Warning Flag) raced in Ireland as a two-year-old recording two wins from four starts including a victory in a Listed race and a second in a Group 3, both over 1,200m.
Sold to Hong Kong, Sweet Orange won over 1,400m in his three-year-old year, but it was as a four-year-old that he came into his own, having had time to acclimatise to Asian racing. In that season, he competed right at the top of Hong Kong racing – his performances included:
- A Grp1 victory in the Hong Kong Classic Mile over 1,600m;
- A Grp1 second (by a nose) in the Hong Kong Classic Cup over 1,800m;
- A Grp 1 third when hot favourite (beaten a neck/neck) in the Hong Kong Derby over 2,000m;
- A Grp1 third in the QEII Cup over 2,000m.
His record shows once accustomed to racing in Asia, he was an elite performer; an adaptability he will likely pass to his progeny, which will make them attractive to the increasingly influential Asian buying benches at the key local bloodstock sales.
